Name: Riel Landa
Alias: Riley
Age: 40 years old
Gender: Male
Race: Enhanced Human
Alignment: Unknown
Date of Birth: March 24th
Place of Birth: The Emerald Reefs
Named after the lush green forests and colorful coral reefs that accompany this set of three tiny islands, The Emerald Reefs lived its prime as a fishing community and resort. The plentiful resources it held made it a prime target for the Crimson Vulture, overtaking the island not soon after their formation.
Physical Appearance:
Riley has a height of 5’10” and is considered to have an average to slender build with a feasible amount of muscle. He has dark hair that is styled into an afro and dark skin. His outfits are usually on the casual side when he’s out and about, donning either a cheap suit or a buttoned shirt and slacks. Outside of that, when pressing matters are at hand, he’ll wear a more layered outfit consisting of a green coat with black cuffs and a white button up shirt underneath, leather gloves, beige jeans, black boots, and holstered pistols at each side.
Pic Base: 1 – 2 – 3
Special Abilities:
Bad Breath – An ability inherited from his father. Riley can blow smoke that when inhaled causes hallucinations of whatever the subject believes will happen next, leaving their body immobile as if sleeping. However, cases may vary depending on the subject’s mental wellness and overall health, with some reporting having had relived past experiences or having been granted their innermost desire. This ability hones in on the senses, having the subject be able to feel and hear whatever it is they’re hallucinating.
This ability is a weaker version of the original, Dying Breath, and can easily be broken by either experiencing great physical pain within the hallucination, physical contact from outside the hallucination, or having a loud and startling noise break them out.
To make his ability seamlessly blend in and unassuming, Riley is usually seen with a smoke in hand.
Light Feet – Despite his looks, Riley is quite light on his feet. Thanks to the rigorous training that he underwent in the assassin’s guild, he can move quietly in almost any manner of shoe and dress. This has made his step naturally light and sometimes he himself won’t notice how unnaturally quiet he can be. If done on purpose, however, he’d have you believe he’s as light as a feather.
Assassin – As good with hands as he is on his feet, Riley is a great thief and assassin even though he’d rather stay out of the shadows as long as he can. The man’s skilled in silent combat and taking down enemies quickly and merciless.
Weapons:
Rosie & Grace – Two pistols that have accompanied Riley ever since his early days in the market. They were given to him as a joke by the original weapon’s dealer as a gift for a young boy who could barely hold both weapons. They’ve seen him through thick and thin and because of that he’s dubbed them his two favorite gals. He only really uses them if absolutely necessary.
Switchblade – Carries it with him wherever he goes. It’s his main form of defense when out and about. He’s tried naming it various times now with names like “greased lightning” or “chance”, but has yet to pick one.
History:
Growing up in the Emerald Reefs meant that Riley got to experience the culture of the islands or, at least, what was left of it due to the Isafaro army’s hold. Despite the less-than-fruitful conditions for the natives, Riley remained a bright and charismatic child alongside his mother and grandparents. During this time, his family taught him how fish, cook, and generally fend for himself.
At the age of twelve, a soldier from Isafaro’s army appeared at the hut Riley called home. He cited the boy to be his son and that he had all right to take him away. Riley’s mother had no recollection of the man and neither did his grandparents, such that there were little-to-no-details on how anything came to be. Riley was whisked away from his home forcefully.
The simple reason behind this? Conscription. The real reason? Conscription of a possibly enhanced human. As Riley’s father was genetically enhanced himself, common sense dictated that any offspring he had would possibly inherit his traits. Since the boy still had a few years head of him before he was to join the army, Riley’s father spent the remaining time trying to figure out if the kid was gifted or not – albeit, in some very non-conventional, harmful ways.
This led Riley to run away from his new home thus ensuing chase from his father for a few days. It was then that, by pure chance, Riley met the weapon’s dealer (who also happened to be the leader of the assassin’s guild) who gave him an ultimatum: join him as a runner or give into the army for the rest of his life. Of course, he chose the former and in a dramatic turn of events was given the chance to prove himself. This, obviously, entailed having to kill off his father as soon as he was found.
The deed was done with no real ease a few hours later.
For years did Riley work with the dealer, thinking himself just a street rat and nothing special. His ability eventually activated and boosted his position to the dealer’s right-hand man. As he grew older, Riley wished to be able to go back home one day; but as his work became deadlier and stakes grew, especially after the dealer’s passing, his thought process became more muddled. The once cheerful boy took on a more manipulative and calculating persona, who used his showmanship to his advantage as Isafaro’s leader of the assassin’s guild and weapon’s dealer.
Now he usually hangs around his joint: the strip club known as Riley’s Place. Or around the city, watching for any going-ons.
